Modern golf originated in Scotland around the 15th century. However, its ancient origins remain uncertain and are still widely contested. According to some historians, the game originated from the game “paganica” in Rome. In that game, players would hit stuffed leather balls using a stick that had been bent. They believed the game spread throughout Europe when Rome dominated most parts of the continent.
Other historians believed it originated from the Chinese game called “chuiwan”, which was played between the 8th and 14th centuries. They believed it was brought and introduced to Europe during the Middle Ages. Other supposed origins included “cambuca” in England, “chambot” in France, “chowkan” from Persia, and “kolven” from the Netherlands.
Modern golf was first recorded in Scotland when James II banned it in 1457 because it distracted from studying archery. James IV lifted the ban in 1502 when he started playing golf as well. The Open Championship played in October 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland is considered the world’s oldest and first major tournament.

European Tour History
The Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) created European Tour in 1901. The association represented the interests of professional golfers from Great Britain and Ireland at the time. They created the Harry Vardon Trophy in 1937. It was awarded to the PGA member with the best stroke average in major tournaments of the season.
